Everything about safeguarding and caring for your child gets easier when the environment is safe and comfortable. If you’re expecting the arrival of a new baby in your home or have young children, don’t forget to inspect and prepare your home’s plumbing system as well.

We love our clients and service many young families. We often provide suggestions and tips to help them keep their home safe around plumbing fixtures when having young children. Most parents already know the basic home preparations and precautions to make their home safe, such as: keeping harmful objects away, adding child locks to doors, drawers, and checking for sharp corners, etc, but they wonder what connection exists between preparing the home’s plumbing system and having small children.

Here are several tips for preparing your home’s plumbing system to reduce the likelihood of causing an injury to your child:

  • Check your water heater and adjust your water heater temperature, turning it down to make sure it’s not producing scalding hot water that could quickly burn a young child. You can also cover faucets with burn-prevention devices.

  • Install child-proof latch on bathroom and kitchen doors

  • Invest in a toilet cover lock - don’t want to flush away small toys that can cause plumbing problems.

  • Place anti-slip mats in your shower or bathtub

  • Always drain tub and sink water when not in use.

  • Install Drain Covers because small openings can entice a child’s natural curiosity. Children could put small objects down the drain.

  • Know where the water valve is to shut off in case of an emergency such as an overflowing toilet.

  • To prevent any risk of electrocution, inspect your Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) outlets or install new ones where needed.

We hope these tips help you think about best practices or remind you of things to update. If you have any questions or need service we would love to hear from you. Give us a call today.
